Exploring the Potential of GPT-4: An Overview for Business Users

GPT-4 Should You Upgrade?

OpenAI has unveiled its latest brainchild - GPT-4. Following a soft launch for select development community members and ChatGPT Plus users, it's now publicly available and sparking some heated debate. Is it genuinely superior to its well-received predecessor, GPT-3.5 (default version of ChatGPT)? Let's delve into the heart of the matter.

GPT-4, upon examination, appears to dance to a different tune than GPT-3.5. This new version boasts a refined ability to grasp nuanced prompt instructions and returns more human-like responses. To demonstrate, we asked GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 to write a blog about CRISPR, a method of genetic editing in a natural tone. By natural tone- I mean't in a more casual manner of speech, but this context was not provided to GPT.

Our findings indicate that GPT-4 successfully interpreted the instructions and composed a more informal article. In contrast, GPT-3.5 produced a more formal, encyclopedic-like response, albeit in a slightly relaxed tone. We believe that a more explicit prompt could have potentially elicited a response from GPT- 3.5 that was more akin to what GPT-4 generated without additional prompting. Overall, GPT-4's output was of superior quality and more in line with the requested task than what was produced by GPT-3.5.

Complex (Legal) Document Analysis

Next, we aimed to compare the document analysis capabilities of GPT-3.5 and GPT-4. To do this, we presented them with a complex, restrictive covenant legal clause, and requested a translation into simple, everyday language.

GPT-4’s explanation stood out with its remarkable detail and natural tone, surpassing the output from 3.5. However, it's fair to note that both versions touched upon the core content efficiently.

GPT-4 Drawbacks

Yet, every rose has its thorns, and GPT-4 is no exception. Its text generation speed lags compared to GPT-3.5, and usage limitations exist, capped at 25 prompts every three hours as of July 8, 2023. Other distinctions come into play with the API version, but that's a story for another day.

Should You Upgrade to ChatGPT Plus?

The burning question remains: who stands to benefit the most from this upgrade? Primarily, those who require more natural-sounding text, such as copywriters and marketers. With GPT-4, their work could see a significant decrease in required editing and rewording.

For everyday tasks like creating labels, text analysis, and generating long-form content, GPT 3.5 holds its ground. However, if you've found GPT-3.5 to be lacking in quality or depth of analysis, then GPT-4 could be your game-changer. In the copywriting universe, imagine GPT-3.5 as a diligent junior, and GPT-4 as a seasoned professional with added years of experience.

Priced at $20 per month, an upgrade seems a worthwhile investment if it can reduce hours spent editing text or interpreting intricate contracts. We conclude with a strong recommendation for businesses to upgrade to ChatGPT Plus and embrace the opportunities that GPT-4 has to offer.
